Freddie’s beloved grand piano sold for £1.74 million
The things of the legendary Freddie Mercury sold under the hammer like hot cakes. Among the lots were a draft of the text of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the door of his house, covered with declarations of love from Queen fans, and the piano on which Freddie composed several of his biggest hits. Mary Austin, the common-law wife of the famous singer, decided to sell his belongings and donate the proceeds to charity.
The first lot at the Sotheby’s auction in London was the door of Freddie Mercury’s house, scratched with graffiti so that there was no living space on it. It was sold to loud applause – for 400 thousand pounds sterling. Then the contents of the singer’s house, which looked like a palace, were consumed. A Tiffany table lamp sold for £60,960, six times its estimate, and an 1895 sideboard sold for £31,760. A print of Picasso’s Jacqueline in a Black Scarf, which hung in the singer’s kitchen, went for £190,500, while Dali’s Mythology series of prints from the same kitchen went for £48,000. Miró’s 1969 Marador print narrowly outdid Dali, selling for £88,900.
The silver snake bracelet that graces Freddie’s hand in the Bohemian Rhapsody video fetched £698,500. This is at a valuation of £9,000. And the draft text for this Queen hit became one of the main auction lots, for which there was a serious fight. It ended up going for £1.38 million. But the most expensive lot was a 1975 Yamaha grand piano, on which Freddie Mercury composed a number of hits. After vigorous bidding, it sold for £1.74 million. This is approximately 212 and a half million rubles
In total, they traded for 12.2 million pounds sterling – that’s one and a half billion rubles. The auction has already been called historic and one of the main events of the world art market this season.
