Foreign Ministry confirms that Nord Stream 2 is being used to gasify northwestern Russia

The infrastructure of Nord Stream 2, located on the territory of Russia, will be used to gasify the regions in the north-west, said Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin. He criticized Europe for refusing to put the gas pipeline into operation. Earlier, Gazprom already announced that it would use the onshore gas transmission facilities built to supply gas to Nord Stream 2 for the domestic market.
In an interview TASS Mr. Pankin said that the leadership of the European Union and Germany “continues to show political stubbornness in its rejection” of the Russian project. “A decision was made to use the SP-2 infrastructure located on the territory of our country for gasification of the north-west of Russia. Therefore, if the German side purely hypothetically decides to commission this gas pipeline, then only one of its lines can be put into operation at this stage,” the deputy minister specified.
Construction of Nord Stream 2 with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters m completed in September 2021. The gas pipeline was not put into commercial operation, since in February 2022 the German authorities stopped its certification, and the United States imposed sanctions against the project operator, Nord Stream 2 AG.
