American automaker Ford is suspending construction of a new $3.5 billion electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Michigan, a company spokesman said in a statement. CNNsaid that a decision on whether the plant will be put into operation has not yet been made.
“We are suspending work and limiting construction costs at Project Marshall until we are confident in our ability to operate the plant competitively,” Ford said in a statement.
The company decided to suspend construction of the plant amid mass strikes by employees in the American auto industry. It targets three major manufacturers – General Motors, Ford and Stellantis. The union demands higher wages and additional benefits.
As noted Reuters, the business considers the requirements unattainable due to subsequent losses. Ford said the benefits and raises would make the business uncompetitive with Tesla and other nonunion companies.
