The US Department of Justice and the FBI have launched an investigation into the actions of the Chinese company ByteDance to spy on journalists through its TikTok video service. This was announced on Thursday, March 16, by the magazine Forbes with reference to sources. The US Department of Justice and the FBI declined to comment on this information.
In December, ByteDance admitted in an internal investigation that some of its employees used TikTok to spy on journalists. So, according to the company, they wanted to find out which of the company’s employees transmits information to the media. Among other things, they received from the application data on the whereabouts of journalists from publications such as the Financial Times and BuzzFeed. Earlier, Forbes also reported about the surveillance of journalists. ByteDance said the surveillance staff had been fired and would not happen again.
Recently, TikTok has come under the scrutiny of US authorities, who believe that data from this service may be in the possession of China. Last December was adopted a law preventing federal employees from using TikTok on gadgets owned by federal government agencies. Next week to TikTok CEO Show Zi Chu will have to appear before the US Congress and answer questions about the privacy of US users’ data, as well as Chinese authorities’ access to such data.
A few days ago Bloomberg informedthat TikTok’s management is considering spinning off from parent company ByteDance in China. Investigation TikTok and ByteDance activities are also taking place in the UK.
