For the Venice Film Festival, Canal + takes its subscribers on a cinephile stroll

INTERVIEW – The encrypted channel joins forces with the Italian festival. Every day, Antoine de Caunes and Didier Allouch will interview the stars and walk the red carpet.

Head for the lagoon to Anthony of Caunes. The host will be the face of Canal +’s new partnership with the Venice Film Festival. He will host a daily news program summarizing the highlights of the Italian film festival, which has become a magnet for Hollywood films hoping to weigh in the race for Oscar nominations.

Canal + subscribers will thus be able to follow the opening ceremonies live, from this evening on MyCanal and Canal + cinema at 7.50 p.m., and the closing ceremonies on September 10. A 26-minute special, presented by Antoine de Caunes, will be broadcast on Sunday September 11 at 1:20 p.m. and will offer the best moments of the Festival and the closing. Finally, all of the group’s channels will feature award-winning feature films or films shown during previous editions of the Mostra. For TVMagazineJean-Marc Juramie, the Canal+ Group’s deputy general manager for pay channels and programmes, lifts the veil on this new unmissable event for film lovers.

TV MAGAZINE – How did this partnership with the Venice Film Festival come about?

Jean-Marc JURAMIE. – The Venice Film Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious of the major European film festivals. Canal+ is the leading partner for cinematographic creation in France, and we are very close to Italian creation. We have co-produced several notable series including The Young Pope, The New Pope by Paolo Sorrentino ZeroZeroZero or Django, one of the novelties of this season. The possibility of exclusively offering our subscribers exceptional coverage of the Mostra was obvious to us. We have entered into an exclusive agreement with Rai, which is the historic broadcaster of the Mostra. This commitment is that of our shareholder Vivendi, which has entered into a multi-year agreement with the Venice Biennale and which wishes to play a major role in the development and promotion of Italian culture.

Does this make it possible to compensate for the loss of the retransmission of the Cannes Film Festival, the rights of which have gone to France Télévisions?

Cannes never left Canal+. We were very present in Cannes this year. All the Cannes films presented or rewarded can be discovered on Canal+, all the stars are also on the air thanks to complete editorial coverage of the festival. On our channels, it’s not Cannes or Venice, it’s Cannes AND Venice!

Does this partnership reflect the growing weight that the Mostra has taken on in the ecosystem of festivals and the awards season?

Venice has for several years already been a major festival and a thighlight of the world cinema calendar. The selection, under the responsibility of Alberto Barbera, the director of the Mostra, is very prestigious. A plethora of French and international talents will be present this year: Cate Blanchett, Penélope Cruz, Timothée Chalamet, Colin Farrell, Adam Driver, Harry Styles (who promises to cause a sensation in the auteur film Don’t Worry Darling), Hugh Jackman ( in the long-awaited “The son” by Florian Zeller) Roschdy Zem (present as director and as actor), Virginie Efira, Isabelle Huppert, Marina Foïs, Yvan Attal, Jacques Weber, Laure Calamy etc… Without forgetting the lion of honor awarded to Catherine Deneuve on opening night as well as the screening of No Bears. Its director Jafar Panahi is currently imprisoned in Iran. Finally, the two Ukrainian films in competition also show that the Mostra resonates with current events and the world of today.

What will Antoine de Caunes’ daily program look like?

We opted for a traveling show: no set, but a stroll through Venice to meet all the talents present for the Festival. In such a beautiful city, we are spoiled for choice to set up our cameras! Antoine will be supported by around twenty employees. Passionate about cinema and an enthusiastic spectator, he is eager to see films and will meet a French or international star every day to talk to them. The show will be programmed every evening in the clear at 8.50 p.m. on Canal+. She will report on the daily news of the Mostra: films, press conference, evenings and of course exclusively the Red Carpet, provided each evening by Didier Allouch. Finally, in partnership with Gala, we also broadcast a short daily program behind the scenes of Venetian evenings: “Stars in Venice”.

Are there any other festivals you would like to be a partner of?

Canal+ is already present in the biggest world cinema events: the Oscars, the Baftas, the Cesar, Cannes, we were missing the Mostra, it’s done! But we are not closing the door to anyone. We deeply love cinema so we have a vocation to be alongside those who promote it.
