The consumer protection association Foodwatch is suing Nestle, which, according to the plaintiffs, uses prohibited water purification methods at its factories in France. This is reported by Le Figaro.
The scandal surrounding the purification of Nestle’s drinking water erupted in late January after information about non-compliance with production standards was revealed by the newspaper. Les Echos. Then it turned out that the French division of Nestle Waters purified contaminated water using ultraviolet light and carbon filters. Such treatment methods are considered sufficient to ensure the purity of tap water, but are prohibited in the EU for the production of bottled mineral water.
At the same time, as French media found out, the French authorities learned about violations of the production process by Nestle Waters back in 2021. It was then that the company contacted the country’s regulators and admitted that it had used illegal methods to purify the water. It is still unknown how long Nestle drinks were produced in violation of the production process. The French authorities, having learned about the violations, simply insisted on compliance with the standards prescribed by European legislation. But the company did not suffer any punishment. The public learned about this only now.
After publishing materials in the media on this topic, Nestle acknowledged the problem, but stated that it stopped resorting to illegal methods of water purification in 2021. According to French newspapers, a third of the brands of drinks produced by the French division of Nestle Waters were produced with violations. Among them are Perrier, Vittel, Hepar and Contrex.
Foodwatch demands that the authorities hold Nestle accountable for violating production standards, as well as concealing information about it. The association intends to seek punishment for the French authorities, who hid the fact of a massive violation from the public.
