Finland remains a transit country for Russian nuclear fuel; the last delivery from Russia was in December 2023. This was reported by TASS representative of the press service of the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) Risto Isaksson.
“Nuclear fuel itself is not subject to sanctions, and transit can be expected to continue until sanctions are imposed on nuclear fuel. There were several transits last year, the last of which was in December 2023,” said Mr. Isaksson.
It is noted that transit transportation began in the fall of 2022 due to the lack of air traffic between Russia and Europe. Risto Isaksson did not disclose the details of the latest transit amid the almost closed Finnish-Russian land border. However, in November 2022, the fuel was shipped to foreign buyers from Lappeenrata Airport. Further deliveries took place through Helsinki.
