FAC.C.T. recorded an increase in the number of phishing sites masquerading as Ozon

In the first half of the year, Ozon and cybercrime technology developer FAC.C.T (formerly Group-IB) blocked almost 11,500 phishing resources that used the marketplace brand. This is 100 times more than in the same period a year earlier. Forbes with reference to FAC.C.T.

According to the company, a third of the blocked sites (about 3,500) were involved in a fraudulent scheme, when money and data from cards were stolen from people under the pretext of buying goods. Also, sites were identified that promise a discount on all Ozon products, provided that they contact the “seller” via messenger, as well as sites with prizes that offer to pay a commission.

In general, FAC.C.T recorded a decline in the activity of fraudsters since the beginning of the year. In particular, the company blocked 498 scam portals in six months compared to 16,967 in the same period in 2022. They also removed 161 posts and groups of scammers in social networks and instant messengers against 611 last year. Kirill Myakishev, director of information security at Ozon, also noted a decrease in the activity of fraudsters, linking this, among other things, to the speed of blocking such resources.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs proposed to introduce criminal penalties for those who help bank fraudsters withdraw money. We are talking about the so-called droppers – people who provide their card details to attackers for a fee. The scammers transfer the stolen funds there, and then along the chain to another person.
