Exports of Russian fertilizers to India in 2023 increased 1.5 times – Kommersant

At the end of 2023, supplies of Russian fertilizers to India increased 1.5 times compared to 2022, to 5.4 million tons, the newspaper reported “Vedomosti” with reference to statistics from the Indian Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Russian Association of Fertilizer Manufacturers confirmed the growth in exports, but did not specify the figures.
Russia’s share in total fertilizer imports to India in 2023 increased from 15% to 23.3%. Meanwhile, China became the largest supplier of products to India – 5.44 million tons. Russia and China provided half of Indian fertilizer imports last year.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation clarified that Russian supplies increased due to the sale of nitrogen fertilizers. At the same time, in monetary terms, exports decreased by 10.3%, to $2.4 billion. This is due to a fall in product prices and discounts.
According to a study by the Center for Price Indexes, Russian chemical companies in 2023, against the backdrop of a reduction in gas supplies from the Russian Federation to Europe, increased sales of nitrogen fertilizers to this market. Thus, Germany’s purchases almost doubled, and France’s by a quarter. Experts note that Russia retains first place in imports of nitrogen fertilizers into EU countries, and its share in total imports increased over the past year by two percentage points, to 24%.
