Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt withdrew his bid to purchase the yacht Alfa Nero after the daughter of the ship’s former owner, Russian businessman Andrei Guryev, claimed ownership of the yacht. The Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to the United States, Ronald Sanders, spoke about this Bloomberg. The yacht was seized by the authorities of Antigua and Barbuda in February 2022, as Andrei Guryev was subject to US sanctions.
According to Ronald Sanders, Eric Schmidt withdrew the application due to legal differences, believing that the government of Antigua and Barbuda “would not be able to provide him with clear title to the ship.”
In June, Eric Schmidt won the auction for the sale of the vessel and intended to buy the yacht for $67.6 million. American developer Warren Halle took second place in the auction. He did not comment on the situation with the legal proceedings surrounding the yacht.
The following month, the daughter of businessman Andrei Guryev, Yulia Guryeva-Motlokhov, presented her rights to the superyacht Alfa Nero in court. According to the lawsuit, the businessman’s daughter is a beneficiary of the Tyne Trust and Flagstaff Trust. These companies own the yacht Alfa Nero and the works of art displayed on it. At the moment, the yacht has been removed from the sanctions list by the US Treasury at the request of the authorities of Antigua and Barbuda.
