The countries of the European Union plan to reduce final energy consumption by 11.7% by 2030. Such solution was adopted following a discussion between the Council of the EU and the European Parliament. According to the European leadership, this measure will improve the effectiveness of the fight against climate change and will help limit the use of Russian energy resources by European countries.
The signed document notes that the final energy consumption in the EU will not exceed 763 million tons of energy in oil equivalent. Each of the EU states will calculate their energy reduction programs, which will be evaluated by the European Commission so that they add up to at least 11.7% reduction, and will make adjustments if necessary. On average per year between 2024 and 2030, EU countries will have to reduce final energy consumption by 1.49%.
In addition, the EU states will have to accelerate the large-scale renovation of buildings occupied by government agencies and annually renovate at least 3% of all such areas in order to eliminate possible heat losses, reducing the need to spend more on heating.
