European Commission spokesman Stefan de Keersmaeker said at a briefing that EU gas storage facilities are 89.99% full. He noted that an abnormally warm winter in Europe contributed to this level of filling of gas storages.
The EU plans to fill gas storage facilities up to 90% by the heating season, which starts in Europe in October. In addition to gas storage facilities in the EU, European companies in July returned to the active use of Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities, which almost ceased after the outbreak of hostilities. In July, about 589 million cubic meters of gas were transferred to Ukraine for storage, which was the highest figure since February 2022.
Meanwhile, against the backdrop of disruptions in the Brazilian energy system and fears of a reduction in LNG supply due to strikes at factories in Australia, gas prices in Europe in mid-August exceeded $450 per 1,000 cubic meters. On August 15, prices rose by 15%, they are also pushed up by hot and calm weather in the EU. According to experts, taking into account the high level of gas reserves in storage facilities, there are no fundamental reasons for a long-term rise in prices.
