EU countries fill their gas storage facilities by 85% – Kommersant

European countries have filled their underground storage facilities with gas by more than 85%, reports TASS with reference to Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) data. If the current volumes of gas injection are maintained, the EU member states will be able to successfully fill the storage facilities to the target 90% by the heating season as early as August.
It is noted that at the moment there are about 93 billion cubic meters in European underground storage facilities. m of gas, which is 15% more than the average for this period over the past five years. At the same time, the gas injection rate in July 2023 was 26% lower than last year and one of the lowest in recent years, the main fuel reserves were pumped into storage in the previous six months.
On July 10, the head of the French TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanne, said that gas reserves in underground storage facilities may not be enough for European countries if the coming winter is cold. Then Europe will have to buy gas in the winter at a high cost.
Europe has significantly reduced the import of Russian gas after the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine. This led to a sharp increase in demand for American gas. In 2021, the total volume of contracts for the supply of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to other countries was about 13 million tons per year. In 2022, this figure almost quadrupled to 51.2 million tonnes.
