Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that it is necessary to start implementing the transit of natural gas from Turkmenistan to Western markets.
“We are ready to cooperate with our Turkmen and Azerbaijani colleagues in the Caspian. Now we need to start working in the same way on transporting Turkmen natural gas to Western markets,” Mr. Erdogan said at the summit of the heads of Turkey, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, which is taking place in Turkmenistan (quoted from Anadolu).
Previously Bloomberg citing a high-ranking Turkish official, wrote that the Turkish president is using a meeting with the presidents of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan to revive the idea of transiting Turkmen natural gas through his country to Europe.
According to the agency, the idea is to ship the gas to Azerbaijan and then pump it into the Southern Gas Corridor pipeline chain linking Azerbaijan to Europe via Georgia and Turkey.
Azerbaijan is already supplying gas to Europe, helping Western countries to replace Russian fuel. Turkmenistan’s resources remain largely untapped. The country cannot supply gas to Europe due to the lack of agreements on its transportation through the Caspian Sea via a pipeline.
Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President agreed to build in Turkey new gas hubto redirect Russian gas flows to EU countries.
