The Battle of Scotland ends with a victory for French Engie.During a giant call for tenders in January, the United Kingdom had awarded to a dozen consortia of energy companies and investors, no less than 20 wind farm projects at sea. Engie, via its joint venture with the Portuguese EDPR, dubbed Ocean Winds, has won two of the last three lots competing in this large program aimed at making the United Kingdom “the Saudi Arabia of offshore wind power”according to the formula of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Faced with 13 other candidates, Ocean Winds has won the right to develop two projects totaling 2.3 gigawatts (GW) of power off the Shetland Islands, including one 50-50 with the renewable specialist Mainstream Renewable Power. The Franco-Portuguese joint venture now owns a total of just over 6.1 gigawatts of parks and projects in Scotland and 14.5 gigawatts worldwide.
