Employers are looking for friends – Kommersant FM

Against the backdrop of a personnel shortage, businesses began to more actively attract employees through the “Refer a Friend” campaign. Large structures are ready to pay their employees for help in expanding their staff, Vedomosti writes. According to the newspaper, the referral program began to cover up to 30% of hiring. True, as Kommersant FM’s interlocutors say, this is not common everywhere and does not apply to all specialties. What bonuses can those who refer a friend to work expect? And what are the companies risking here?

If you believe official statistics, it is becoming more and more difficult for Russian businesses to find personnel from month to month. Unemployment, according to Rosstat, remained at a minimum of 3% for a long time, and in October it decreased further. HR specialists interviewed by Kommersant FM emphasize that companies are looking for employees using a whole arsenal of means: on their own, through recruitment agencies and specialized hunting services, and now increasingly through their employees.

If they bring friends, acquaintances or relatives to the company, and they pass the selection, such an amateur headhunter receives a bonus. Previously, this was mainly done by small and medium-sized businesses, but the strategy turned out to be effective for large companies, says Tatyana Dolyakova, general director of the ProPersonnel agency: “First, you recommend a person whom you already know on some positive side. Secondly, loyalty to you as an employee grows, since this demonstrates your involvement in the development of the company.

The “Refer a Friend” campaign is probably the first way I would always recommend starting with the search for candidates for a vacancy, and then you can use HR services and websites.”

Recommendation or referral programs of large businesses are structured approximately the same, only the size of the bonus differs. According to a Vedomosti survey, VK employees, including freelancers, can claim 70 thousand rubles, Severstal 30 thousand rubles, and Yandex Delivery only 6 thousand rubles. In one of the largest oil and gas companies, the bonus for a referred employee is 25 thousand rubles. Similar personnel search systems are also available at Rusal, Kaspersky Lab and Rostec.

There is a caveat in the conditions: first of all, representatives of blue-collar professions are required. Such a program applies to them in the Konfael group of companies, Irina Eldarkhanova, chairman of the company’s board of directors, told Kommersant FM: “We have been practicing this system for many years, but only for seasonal workers. Employees are fully responsible for those they bring in; they must work well, maintain discipline, meet production standards, and so on. The average bonus is 5-15 thousand rubles, it depends on how the person worked and for how long.”

The general director of the Elkat copper rod and wire production plant, Maxim Tretyakov, after a conversation with Kommersant FM, thought about launching a “Bring a Friend” program. They had used personnel recommendations from their own employees before, but they were not paid for it. There are nuances, emphasizes Maxim Tretyakov:

“From the point of view of the employee himself, who led someone by the hand, this is a certain risk. Because if suddenly a new person doesn’t get along with our team and leaves after three months, will we have to return the bonuses paid? Most likely, the money will already be spent. I’ll think about this system.

For example, we pay for length of service, why not introduce special bonuses as part of the “Refer a Friend” campaign.”

Meanwhile, the employee shortage is growing. At the beginning of December, the Superjob service reported a staff shortage in 85% of Russian companies. Over the past 2023, the number of vacancies has increased by more than 1.5 times, and the number of published resumes, on the contrary, has decreased. The biggest shortage of qualified workers is truck drivers, special transport drivers and engineers.
