Telegram founder Pavel Durov said that the platform did not confirm the presence of a vulnerability in the application for Apple computers. The official message with a list of risks for PC owners on macOs was previously noticed by the media.
“(The risk exists.—“b”) only if: you have malware with root access on your Mac, you use Telegram for macOs downloaded from the App Store (update with fix pending) – if you downloaded the app from our site, you will not be affected”, — indicated platform representatives.
Whether both points should be combined, or only one is enough for a vulnerability to occur, Telegram did not specify. Publications came out with a message that the social network confirmed the presence of a vulnerability. Pavel Durov did not agree with this formulation.
“In our message, we explained that there was no vulnerability. Because the claimed “vulnerability” was this: “If an attacker already had access to your computer, he could control your camera and microphone via Telegram.” But if the computer is already compromised, then accessing the microphone via Telegram is the least of the problems to worry about, ”Mr. Durov wrote in his Russian language channel.
According to the entrepreneur, in technical topics, the media “often chase high-profile headlines” and mislead users. “If the media headlines about imaginary and real threats are the same, people will stop taking them seriously – it will turn out like in a fable about a boy who unnecessarily shouted “Wolf”,” Mr. Durov warned.
About how scammers flooded Telegram with their programs – in the material “Kommersant” “Telegram took care of phishing”.
