Bombs from the First and Second World Wars were discovered during the construction of a terminal for receiving liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the port of Wilhelmshaven in Germany. Because of this, the construction of the terminal is delayed. Dieter Guldin, Chief Executive Officer of SeaTerra, a company specializing in the search and disposal of shells, announced this.
“We found all kinds of ammunition: German, from the UK, the Netherlands, France, different types,” Mr. Guldin said in an interview with the newspaper. The New York Times (NYT).
According to the NYT, from 150 to 200 unexploded bombs, grenades and mines were found at the construction site, of which about 30 must be destroyed on the spot.
During the Second World War, the German naval forces were based in the port of Wilhelmshaven, because of this it was often bombed by the US and British air forces, the newspaper notes. By the end of the war, Wilhelmshaven had become “a dumping ground for unused munitions”.
Europe has reduced imports of Russian gas after the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, which led to a sharp increase in demand for American LNG. In 2021, the total volume of contracts for the supply of American LNG to other countries was about 13 million tons per year. In 2022, this figure almost quadrupled to 51.2 million tonnes.
