Foreign equipment has become more expensive on marketplaces. This is due to the reduction of the duty-free import threshold from €1 thousand to €200. As a result, as the media noted, prices for gadgets from Apple, Samsung, Dyson and some other goods imported from abroad rose by 15%. Moreover, some marketplaces indicate the amount of duty separately, without including it in the cost of the goods on the card.
Prices for gadgets on marketplaces will be closer to retail prices, which will make purchases less attractive, noted Dmitry Petrov, head of the product management department of the X-Com group of companies: “First of all, this affected consumer electronics, which were ordered through foreign marketplaces by individuals or those who sold on behalf of individual entrepreneurs. This rise in price, in principle, will not affect the large retail market in any way, because all deliveries there are in large volumes and are not subject to this rule. In fact, this is largely a whitewashing of the market and the departure of “gray” players.
This will have a minor impact on market demand. Often these suppliers were outside the legal framework in terms of the implementation of warranty obligations. Yes, anyone who wanted could buy it cheaper, but had risks under the warranty. But the big players have been selling and will continue to sell; their prices will not rise at all.”
The demand for gadgets is now low, so entrepreneurs have time to try out new sales formats, noted Wylsacom blogger Valentin Petukhov: “The demand is not the highest right now, so perhaps sellers are experimenting with hybrid schemes, when the duty is paid by the buyer. I think that if demand drops significantly, then, of course, sellers will lower their margins and return prices to some kind of adequate state.
But this is a long-standing Russian feature: duties increase – prices rise, duties decrease – prices rise. In general, prices do not depend on anything. This is just a good reason to try raising prices right now and see what happens. Fortunately, today everything is quite flexible, and if demand drops significantly, you can always roll back prices and make up for it with some special promotions.
But prices on marketplaces will still remain lower than those of large retailers, because the latter incurs more costs due to more complex imports, although, of course, this spread will decrease.
And this difference in price is exactly what allows marketplaces to sell volumes of equipment; if they are equal in the final price tag to classic retail, then, I assume, buyers’ interest will drop significantly.”
Large marketplaces opposed lowering the duty-free import threshold. In particular, Ozon said that because of this, the volume of cross-border trade in Russia will decrease by 18-20%, prices for goods will rise, and the range will be reduced.
