According to the results of the first half of 2023, Fyodor Dostoevsky became the most published author in Russia. Stephen King, who was previously the leader, dropped to sixth place, follows from the statistics of the Russian Book Chamber (.pdf).

The total circulation of Dostoevsky’s works in the first half of the year amounted to 463.2 thousand copies against 577.6 thousand in January-June 2022. In second place in the ranking of Agatha Christie – 411 thousand copies against 454 thousand a year earlier. On the third – Anna Jane (pseudonym of the Russian writer Anna Potapkina). In the first half of the year, the total circulation of her works amounted to 294 thousand. Last year, she was not in the ranking.

On the fourth line – Erich Maria Remarch with a circulation of 271.5 thousand, on the fifth – Leo Tolstoy with a circulation of 254.77 thousand. Stephen King is on the sixth line. At the end of the first half of the year, the circulation of his books fell to 240.9 thousand from 1 million in the first half of 2022, notes RBC.

For the first time, the Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of the Witcher saga, got into the rating. The total circulation of his books reached 132 thousand copies, he is on the 18th line. Also included in the rating for the first time were Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes detective stories (130,000 copies), Russian author of romance novels Asya Lavrinovich (219,000 copies) and American writer Emma Scott (total circulation – 189,000).

In the segment of children’s literature, JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, left the list of the most published authors. The leader of the rating in the first half of 2023 was Korney Chukovsky.

After the start of the special operation, famous writers, including Neil Gaiman and Stephen King, said they would not agree to any publication of their works in Russia during the conflict. The Guardian wrotethat this year British writers are being offered higher fees for the right to publish their books in Russia.

According to the results of the first quarter of the year, the total circulation of books and brochures in Russia fell to 69 million copies, which is 23% less than in the first quarter of 2022 (90 million copies).
