American pizza chain Domino`s Pizza has closed its last 29 restaurants in Italy. transmits Bloomberg agency.
Domino`s Pizza started operating in Italy in 2015 under a franchise agreement with local company ePizza. Problems arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the chain faced fierce competition from local establishments that refocused on pizza delivery and entered into lucrative agreements with Deliveroo, Just Eat Takeaway, Glovo services.
“We attribute the problem to a significantly increased level of competition in the food delivery market, where food is delivered by both organized chains and family restaurants,” the company said in a financial report. The main business model of Domino`s in Italy was the direct visit of customers to pizzerias, which also became impossible under the coronavirus restrictions.
The company began to reduce its presence in Italy in 2020, and on July 29 this year stopped offering delivery from its website.
