Today it is difficult for domestic cinema to compete with the American film industry, which is a multi-billion dollar empire. The artistic director of the Modern theater, director Yuri Grymov, believes that Soviet cinema had every chance of becoming much more popular if not for American expansion.
In an interview with Gazeta.Ru Grymov noted that the Russian theater managed to preserve its originality due to the fact that the influence of American culture there is insignificant. In the film industry, in turn, there was a similar situation with the Soviet automobile industry, in which a feeling of inferiority took root, because of which the domestic author’s cinema was destroyed, the director emphasized.
According to him, an inferiority complex was imposed on the Soviet Union, that high-quality cars could not be made there, after which the Soviet auto industry disappeared. Then, as Grymov noted, they said that Soviet cinema was bad, which is why every VGIK student began to dream of working in Hollywood, having no idea what was happening there.
The director added that domestic film works cannot be filmed if there is no market for them. Grymov recalled that Andrei Tarkovsky once dreamed that the cost of films would fall, and that artists could free themselves from commerce. Although now it is really falling, the rental system has been destroyed, the artistic director of the Modern Theater concluded.
