Diageo CEO dies

The world’s largest producer of alcoholic beverages Diageo informed that its CEO, Sir Ivan Menezes, passed away today after a short illness. The company says Sir Ivan was taken to hospital today for treatment “for a number of indications, including a stomach ulcer”, but on June 5 he suffered a “significant deterioration in his condition”.
On June 30, he was supposed to officially step down as CEO, this was a planned decision, about which announced in late March. Then in March, Debra Crew, the operating director of the company, was named his successor to the post. In connection with the death of Ivan Menezes, she has already taken on new duties.
Diageo notes that Sir Ivan was one of the most respected leaders of companies included in the FTSE index. He joined Diageo in 1997, when the company itself arose after the merger of Guinness plc and Grand Metropolitan plc. Until 2013, he held several senior positions, including the positions of chief operating officer and head of regional divisions. In 2013 he became CEO.
During his tenure, Diageo’s shares rose almost 50%. The company has significantly expanded its range, more than 200 items of its products are sold in more than 180 markets around the world, including products under the brands Guinness, Smirnoff, Gordon’s, Johnnie Walker. The company leads the world in net sales of Scotch whiskey, vodka, gin, rum, liqueurs and tequila. The company also notes the active charitable and social activities of Ivan Menezes, as well as his attention to issues of equality, ecology, and support for small businesses. Earlier this year, he was knighted by King Charles III for his contributions to business and equality.
