Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, proposed removing the blocking from Twitter after the social network returned access to the accounts of Russian departments. On April 7, pages of Russian ministries, including the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Defense, began to appear again in Twitter searches.
“As for the removal of restrictions from government agencies. Many of them are in no hurry to reopen their accounts, especially since Twitter is officially blocked in Russia. But I think it’s time to reconsider this measure, given the new policy of the new leadership. If the social network is now aimed at neutrality, it is necessary to resume dialogue with it and continue working within the framework of the legislation of the Russian Federation, ”Mr. Gorelkin wrote in Telegram-channel.
According to the deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Twitter can again become a convenient platform for Russian departments to “explain Russia’s position to Western audiences.”
On March 10, 2021, Roskomnadzor began slowing down Twitter on mobile devices and desktop computers for not deleting information whose distribution is prohibited in Russia. On May 17, 2021, after Twitter removed over 91% of prohibited content, access restrictions on fixed networks were lifted. However, Roskomnadzor continued to slow down traffic on mobile devices.
On March 1 this year, Roskomnadzor again began slowing down Twitter traffic on desktop computers due to the publication of “inaccurate socially significant information on the subject of a special military operation in Ukraine.” On March 4, Twitter was completely blocked in Russia.
