Demand for refurbished smartphones has quadrupled in Russia

Demand for refurbished smartphones has quadrupled in Russia. We are talking about the period from January to March 2024, it was compared with the same period in 2023, writes RIA Novosti with reference to data from MegaFon and Yota. They clarified that the average price of the gadget was about 23 thousand rubles. Last year, the leader in the secondary market was Samsung; in the first quarter of 2024, the Apple brand was first in the top, chosen by every third buyer.

Most often, Russians purchased iPhone 11 with 128 and 64 GB memory, as well as iPhone 12 Pro Max with 512 GB. First of all, buyers are attracted by the price, notes the owner of the Fixed. One service center, Dmitry Druzhbin: “This is a convenient scheme for the entire market, when a person can hand over his phone and get some money back. Then this phone is restored, the body and screen are replaced, conditionally, and they sell it again at a slightly reduced price. Everything is positive. This is where we truly get a win-win solution.

There is most likely no risk that low-quality spare parts will be supplied, because we are talking about legally refurbished phones. The company issues them with exactly the same warranty as for new smartphones, and new spare parts are installed. Therefore, there is no chance that something will be of poor quality, will not work, will be worse than the original. The only issue is the issue of aging, but again in electronics, as a rule, three to four years is the normal period, and the battery is replaced with a new one in any case. As for the boards, the fact that the board will fail is a matter of chance for both new and refurbished phones.”

However, not all networks recorded high demand for refurbished smartphones. As the X-Com group of companies told Kommersant FM, their clients are mainly corporate customers who are distrustful of reassembled gadgets. M.Video-Eldorado added that they also do not note high activity in the secondary smartphone market. At the same time, the group of companies is recording an increase in demand for insurance policies, as well as prompt repairs and protection of screens.

Such a purchase may have risks, although minimal, says Sergei Kuznetsov, editor-in-chief of itzine.ru and author of the ForGeeks podcast: “In fact, there are two types of refurbished phones. The first ones are those that have been properly restored, and these are, apparently, what we are talking about. Smartphones that were handed over to operators for some reason are replaced with newer ones. Accordingly, old devices are put in order, pre-sale preparation is carried out, sometimes something has to be changed there, something uncritical, so to speak.

And the second large part are the so-called Chinese refurbished phones. When, out of three or four killed iPhones or Samsungs (most often iPhones), one semi-working version is assembled somewhere in China. And in Russia, the Chinese refurbished segment accounts for much more phones sold; they are the ones most often found on Avito now.

The first sign of a Chinese refurbished iPhone is that they are offered as new, but have not been officially sold as new for a long time.

There is a demand for such phones because they are cheaper, and, as practice shows, people very often buy such smartphones not for themselves, but for relatives. First of all, children, grandmothers, parents. Because phones need to be updated periodically, and now quite a lot of people continue to carry iPhone 6, iPhone 7, their cycle has passed, and here is this option.”

According to MegaFon and Yota, refurbished Samsung smartphones took second place in sales, the lag behind Apple was only 1%. The most popular models were the Galaxy A10 and A12. Xiaomi closes the top three, with a share of 15%.
