Demand for cloud services and hosting in Russia is growing

The demand of clients “with Russian roots” for the services of hosting providers and cloud providers in Europe, such as the UK and Germany, fell by 5%, while in Russia it grew by 17.5%. Companies, and not only domestic ones, refuse the services of global players in favor of local providers due to inflated prices and a general decline in business activity in the EU, market participants believe.
“Kommersant” got acquainted with the data of the hosting provider RuVDS on the dynamics of demand for computing power in Russia and abroad. According to the company’s estimates, the growth in demand for hosting websites, storing and processing data in the Russian Federation over the past year as of summer amounted to 17.5% against 6% a year earlier. At the same time, the demand for capacities in Europe fell by 5%, while a year earlier there was an increase in demand up to 100%. The company clarifies that, first of all, we are talking about “clients with Russian roots.”
The outflow of users of computing power in the EU “is more like migration,” says Pavel Kulakov, founder of the network of data centers and cloud provider Oxygen, and we are talking about part of a global trend: “Many European consumers have begun to refuse placement with large international players, for example, such like Amazon, due to inappropriately high prices.
In Russia, we can talk about a threefold increase in demand for computing power compared to last year, while the outflow in Europe (Switzerland, Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands) is noted, among other things, in favor of new business areas – Kazakhstan, Turkey, this is a trend of recent months , said RuVDS founder Nikita Tsaplin.
European countries have ceased to be friendly to the Russian Federation, and if a company can afford to be located somewhere abroad, it chooses the CIS countries or Turkey, adds Dmitry Mikheev, technical director of IT Bastion.
At the same time, Russian hosting providers began to actively enter friendly markets – for example, Turkish (see “Kommersant” dated August 2), as well as increase capacity in Central Russia, as companies have noticeably increased demand for placement in data centers, for example, beyond the Urals (see Kommersant of July 27). At the beginning of 2023, according to Selectel, 60% of providers have increased demand for cloud infrastructure services.
There is also a tendency to transfer hosting and data processing from the EU countries to Russia, Dmitry Mikheev adds: “For a long time, server resource rental in European data centers has been popular for various reasons – price, level of service, low security risks. Now for many Russian companies there are additional restrictions on the placement of data: they must be on the territory of the country.”
The dynamics of demand for capacities in Russia is connected, firstly, with the departure of foreign suppliers, and secondly, with the curtailment of the work of Russian companies in Europe, says Vitaly Mankevich, head of the Russian-Asian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RASPP).
The general decline in demand in the EU, he adds, was the result of a decrease in business activity: “In the first quarter of 2023, the euro area economy officially entered a recession and GDP contracted by 0.1% after declining in the previous quarter.”
