Cascading Elective Affinities
Students at Trinity College, Dublin, Frances (Alison Oliver) and Bobbi (Sasha Lane), who dated in high school, declaim feminist poems on stage. Their performance catches the eye of thirtysomething essayist Melissa (Jemima Kirke, Girls). She invites the duo to her home. Bobbi and Frances meet her comedian husband, Nick (Joe Alwyn, The Favourite). The meeting provokes cascading elective affinities: Bobbi is not insensitive to Melissa’s charm. Frances is drawn to the depressed Nick. The former remain in the platonic stage, the latter begin an affair. In this tangle of feelings and betrayals, Nick and Melissa pitch less than Bobbi and Frances, forced to confront their unspoken.

Conversations with Friends is a more complex, less pleasant portrait of four people stagnating in their lives. They cannot evolve unless they meet, shake up established relationships, or even manipulate each other.
