The damage to the Baltika telecommunications cable of Rostelecom in the Gulf of Finland did not affect the operation of the communication infrastructure, the company said. According to her, cable repair will take approximately 10 working days.
Rostelecom assured that communications in the Kaliningrad region with the rest of Russia are functioning normally, and data transmission is “organized along terrestrial routes, and there are also backup satellite communication channels.” Before carrying out restoration work, the company sent notifications to all “interested departments” and the government of Finland (part of the cable was laid in the exclusive economic zone of this country).
“On November 5, the specialized vessel “Spasatel Karev” began restoration work. The approximate time frame is 10 working days, depending on weather conditions,” said the press service of Rostelecom (quote from TASS).
The Baltika communication cable, about 1 thousand km long, runs between St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad, partially falling into the economic zones of Finland and Sweden. The length of the submarine cable in the Finnish zone is about 377 km, in the Swedish economic zone – about 395 km.
On October 12, Rostelecom notified the Finnish authorities about the failure of the Baltika cable. Finland asked to postpone the repairs due to an investigation into the incident with the Balticconnector gas pipeline, whose work was suspended on October 8 due to a leak. Ministry of Economic Affairs of Finland reportedthat the Russian repair vessel began work on the cable yesterday, November 6. At the Kremlin no information about the causes of cable damage.
