Since the beginning of 2023, cucumbers have risen in price by 53.6% by the end of December 2022, transmits RBC with reference to Rosstat data.

It is specified that for the week of February 6, the cost of cucumbers increased by 12.7%. For comparison, at the beginning of 2022, the price increase for these vegetables was 16%. The leaders of the rise in prices also included tomatoes, which have grown in price by 29.6% since the beginning of the year.

In the National Union of Producers of Fruits and Vegetables (Fruit and Vegetables Union), such a sharp jump in prices is associated with seasonality and an increase in the cost of electricity. It is specified that the share of energy costs in year-round greenhouses can be up to 50% of the cost of cucumbers. Meanwhile, since December 2022, electricity tariffs have been indexed by 9%, recalled in the Fruit and Vegetable Union.

The retail chain “Verny” clarified that the purchase price of cucumbers increased the most, and not their cost. According to RBC, the purchase price increased by 35% over the month. This may be due, among other things, to a reduction in the harvest and planting of new varieties of cucumbers that will bear fruit in the spring. At the same time, the FAS did not receive any complaints about this.

According to industry participants, cucumber prices may stabilize as early as March. This will be affected, among other things, by a reduction in energy costs, since there will be more natural light in greenhouses, as well as the start of mass fruiting of cucumbers.

According to Rosstat, for the week from January 31 to February 6, fruit and vegetable production on average has risen in price by 5.1%. In particular, prices for cucumbers increased by 12.7%, onions – by 11.5%, tomatoes – by 4.6%, carrots – by 3%, bananas – by 2.4%. Sausages and cheeses rose in price by 0.4%, while seeds, biscuits and vodka – by 0.3%. At the same time, buckwheat (-1%), black tea (-0.6%), pork (-0.5%), chicken and sausages (-0.3%) fell in price.
