Indian newspaper The Economic Times (ET), citing sources, reported that the implementation of joint projects between Russia and China to develop resources in the Far East and the Arctic has slowed down due to disputes between the parties. Negotiations on the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline, according to the publication, are slowing down discussions of the financial part of the agreements.
China, as ET writes, wants Russia to bear all the costs of building the Power of Siberia-2. In March 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin saidthat the parties agreed on almost all the parameters of the agreements.
The ET report said China is also trying to expand its presence in the Arctic Ocean amid worsening relations between Russia and the West. At the same time, according to the publication, Moscow wants to receive global investments in this region, and not just Chinese ones.
The publication notes that China is at risk of reducing trade supplies by sea. The ice on the territory of the Northern Sea Route may completely melt in 2035, which will partially change global logistics and increase Russia’s military influence in the Arctic.
