The artistic director of the State Academic Philharmonic Society has died in St. Petersburg. D. D. Shostakovich, People’s Artist of the USSR, conductor Yuri Temirkanov, reported press service of the cultural institution. He was 84 years old.
Yuri Temirkanov was born in 1938 in Nalchik.
In the 1960s–1970s he worked as a conductor of the Leningrad Academic Maly Opera and Ballet Theater and the Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic. From 1976 to 1988 – artistic director and chief conductor of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater. S. Kirov (now the Mariinsky Theater).
In 1988, he was elected artistic director and chief conductor of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic named after D. D. Shostakovich.
Laureate of two USSR State Prizes, State Prize named after. M.I. Glinka and two State Prizes of the Russian Federation. Knight of the Order of Lenin and full holder of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.
