Russians began to buy assembled computers more often. In 2023, the share of desktop PCs assembled in a handicraft or semi-handicraft way has grown to 20%, Izvestia claims, citing a report from a partner company of several electronics manufacturers. In terms of figures, sales of such devices more than doubled over the year, to approximately 260 thousand units, the newspaper writes. According to the Avito service, the average price of such computers is approximately 40 thousand rubles. In general, over the year, sales of devices by individuals increased by 66%.
Homemade PCs can indeed be noticeably cheaper than those sold in large networks, noted independent video game expert Alexander Kuzmenko: “Any computers that are somehow sold through large retailers will be more expensive in the final retail price than those devices that from exactly the same components are purchased either online or in specialized stores. After all, in the second case there are no extra costs for logistics, warehouses, marketing and everything else. Moreover, such PCs are in no way inferior in performance to a computer that was purchased under the brand name of some major brand.
When large retailers began to come up with categories of computers – this is for study, this is for games, this is for work – the segment of assembling a PC for yourself or for friends did not exactly disappear, but rather moved into a quiet artisanal medium-sized business.
Small offices will assemble a device to order that will suit the client’s wallet. Moreover, many of them operate at the level not even of an LLC, but of a regular individual entrepreneur, and provide some kind of guarantee.
But, of course, when you are dealing with a medium-sized business, and even more so with a small one, there are risks. However, fraud in this area is usually the exception rather than the rule. Because such small companies are interested in creating a certain circle of clients around themselves, who will then spread word of mouth about what a good service center it is, a store selling computer components, and the like.”
Last year, both Ozon and Wildberries recorded an increase in sales of hand-assembled computers. True, there is no need to talk about a noticeably lower price for such devices; if individual sellers actually reduce the cost, they often work to zero, explained Sergei Vilyanov, editor-in-chief of the Vilianov.com portal:
“Desktop computers have historically been assembled in our country both on the production lines of large and relatively small distributors. Simply because it was much cheaper this way. PC takes up a lot of space. Transporting a box with this very computer from abroad is absolutely unprofitable. After brands left Russia under various pretexts, these production lines did not disappear anywhere.
If we talk specifically about personal assembly, then, for example, there have always been configurators on websites that helped to create the device the client needed. An understanding person will not use this configurator, because he does not need it, he himself knows perfectly well what to buy. And a not very dedicated customer cannot use it either, because it is unlikely that he will distinguish DDR4 memory from DDR5 and understand what an SSD with a DRAM buffer is and what an SSD without a DRAM buffer is. At the same time, the marginality of selling a finished computer does not exceed 3-5%, and sometimes we are talking about fractions of some percentage.
In order for a computer assembly business to be profitable, it must, on the one hand, be large-scale, that is, at least within ten computers a day, and preferably hundreds, and, on the other hand, it must be tailored to specific orders that must be immediately leave”.
According to Kommersant, last year in Russia the demand for repair of foreign electronics components increased. The most in demand service is for Nvidia, HP and Supermicro equipment, since the companies do not have official support and do not supply components to Russia.
