Hero of Labor of Russia and People’s Artist of Dagestan, composer Murad Kazhlaev died at the age of 92, reported TASS press service of the Dagestan Ministry of Culture.
The republic’s Minister of Culture Zarema Butaeva told the agency that Mr. Kazhlaev will be buried in a cemetery in Makhachkala on Tankaeva Street, next to his wife.
Murad Kazhlaev was born on January 15, 1931 in Baku. Studied at the Azerbaijan State Music Academy. In 1963–1964 he was artistic director of the Dagestan Philharmonic. In 1965 he created the vocal and instrumental ensemble “Gunib” (later known as “Gaya”).
In 1963–1973, Mr. Kazhlaev was the chairman of the Union of Composers of the Dagestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and from 1968 – secretary of the board of the Union of Composers of the RSFSR. In 1993–1996 – deputy of the State Duma. In 2010, the composer founded a music school for gifted children in Dagestan. Mr. Kazhlaev is the author of the music for the anthem of the Republic of Dagestan.
