Composer Dashkevich on the death of Yuri Temirkanov: “There are no conductors of this caliber in the country”

“A great master who has done a lot for new music”
The famous composer, author of the title theme in the Soviet television series about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, Vladimir Dashkevich, in a conversation with an MK correspondent, sadly responded to the death of the brilliant conductor, artistic director of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Yuri Temirkanov. Life and creative work in different cities led to the fact that the two artists hardly communicated for two decades, although they were friends at the end of the USSR. Dashkevich is convinced that with the departure of Temirkanov, there are no conductors of this level of skill left in Russia.
“This is a huge loss for culture, Temirkanov is a great master, who did a lot for new music, kept the orchestra in excellent shape, coming to the post of conductor after Evgeny Mravinsky. In fact, we don’t have conductors of this caliber in our country, there are interesting ones, but Temirkanov’s level was higher,” Dashkevich said.
– Have you communicated in recent years?
– At one time we communicated, even when the Soviet Union was in half-life. We met in Repino at the House of Composers, talked, he was interested in the latest film music, including Sherlock Holmes. We had such a group – Andrei Petrov, me and Temirkanov. We interacted very closely. But I am a Muscovite, he is in St. Petersburg, so for the last 20 years we have practically not communicated.
Let us recall that the death of Yuri Khatuevich Temirkanov was announced with regret by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic on November 2. The reason for leaving is unknown at this time. On December 10, the outstanding artist would have turned 85 years old.
