Specialists have restored communications on the islands of Kunashir and Shikotan in the South Kuril Islands, said Alexander Snegirev, Minister of Digital and Technological Development of the Sakhalin Region. Communication was disrupted due to damage to the submarine cable.
Emergency restoration work was carried out on the night of October 12. The specialists managed to establish communication “according to a temporary scheme, using the surviving cable cores.” Users gained access to all operator services, including the Internet.
“For backup communications, Rostelecom PJSC was additionally allocated a satellite channel with a capacity of 100 Mbit/s. It will be activated in case of communication interruptions,” says Mr. Snegirev in a statement on website regional government. Mobile operators are “actively working” to organize their backup channels via satellite.
The submarine fiber optic cable between the islands of Kunashir and Iturup was damaged on October 7. The damage site was located 5 km from the coastline of Kunashir Island. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the cause of the accident.
