Coal prices hit their lowest in 12 months

The cost of thermal coal in Europe began to decline following the price of gas, reaching a minimum since February 2022. On February 2, 2023, futures for thermal coal delivered to the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp (ARA) traded at $136/t, according to the ICE exchange. Since the beginning of 2023, thermal coal in Europe has fallen in price by 28%.

Quotes of Australian and South African coal are also falling on the global market. On February 2, South African coal (FOB Richards Bay) futures price for March delivery was $144.5/t, down 21% from early 2023 and also the lowest since February last year, according to ICE. The cost of February futures for Australian coal (FOB Newcastle) is $245/t (-32.5% compared to the level of early January 2023) – the lowest since April 2022.
