CNN: Up to 35 oil tankers enter the shadow fleet to transport oil from Russia every month

Russia is increasing the volume of tankers for oil transportation, reports CNN. According to the channel, from 25 to 35 ships enter the shadow fleet every month. In total, about 600 tankers (10% of the world market) are used to transport Russian oil. Previously, the same number was called Bloomberg.
Senior analyst at Kpler Matthew Wright divides ships carrying Russian oil into two categories: “gray” and “dark ships”. According to CNN, the “gray ships” were sold by European owners to firms in the Middle East and Asia after the start of the Russian operation in Ukraine. The Dark Ships are owned by Iranian and Venezuelan companies.
As Matthew Wright clarified, in most cases, “dark ships” turn off the automatic identification system, which allows you to determine the ships, their dimensions and route, so it is almost impossible to track them.
Despite the fact that Western countries have banned most of the import of Russian oil, there is no ban on delivering it to buyers for foreign ships, CNN notes. According to Kpler, European-owned vessels accounted for 36% of Russian oil trade in January.
After the entry into force of the price ceiling for offshore oil supplies, most of the Russian resource, which is subject to the embargo, redirected to China and India. According to the International Energy Agency, in December 2022, the export of Russian oil and oil products to India amounted to 1.6 million barrels per day. According to Bloomberg, India buys oil from Russia at a deep discount, and after processing sends the fuel to Europe. According to The Wall Street Journal, the countries of North Africa adhere to the same system.
