Cinemas are buying soap – Kommersant FM

Domestic online cinemas decided to add classic Latin American TV series to their collection. Negotiations to acquire the rights to the show are already underway. Soon on all major platforms it will be possible to watch such cult melodramas as “Wild Rose”, “Slave Isaura” and “The Rich Also Cry”, Izvestia reports. What determines the choice of services? And what are their benefits? Details from Daria Fomenko.

Famous Mexican and Brazilian TV series from the 90s and 2000s will become available on Russian platforms. Films may become popular again due to a developing trend: audiences are now actively re-watching old films. This process gives them a feeling of nostalgia.

At the moment, online cinemas are in the process of negotiations. Perhaps they will be able to agree on the purchase of modern film products. And although the most popular content on streaming platforms is still Russian-made films, accessible foreign content helps retain the audience, says Denis Kuskov, CEO of Telecom Daily:

“Mainly, domestic films attract the attention of viewers. Telecom Daily will release about 140 pieces of content in 2023. On the one hand, this is a good number, a large one for all time. On the other hand, not thousands of pictures, like on Netflix. Therefore, of course, companies are trying to saturate their libraries with new or old film producers – these are Korea, India, Turkey, Brazilian TV series. It is likely that such content will be able to gather a certain audience.”

Recently, the popularity of Turkish content has also increased. But interest in the film production of the Latin American region was aroused by the recent remake of the cult series “The Rich Also Cry.” In Russia it was released on April 1 and received a rating of 8.1 on the ivi service. In the context of the departure of Western films, platforms have to turn to those projects that already have their own audience, notes film critic Ivan Afanasyev:

“This is not really a support for any existing content, but simply an attempt to expand the audience. It would be logical to expand the audience through major foreign purchases of some television series from HBO Max. But since there are no such options, there is a proven story, it has its own audience, so it is logical that it is purchased at a time when there is not enough content.”

Adding old soap operas to online movie catalogs could be a coup thanks to the nostalgia trend. The media wrote back in 2022 that the fashion for the old has returned again. And even if “Slave Isaura” and “The Rich Also Cry” do not win the attention of young Russians, the family subscription system will help increase the number of viewers, continues film critic Ivan Afanasyev:

“It’s unlikely that young guys of 20-30 years old will seriously watch these soap operas, because they already have enough content, they know how to use torrents. But often users purchase a family subscription so that mom, dad, and children can watch the movie. Therefore, older relatives can easily watch such series from other devices.”

The exchange of film production products goes in both directions. Russian companies are also interested in selling their own content abroad. It is especially in demand in Serbia, Vietnam and India. In total, in 2023, foreigners will buy 20% more Russian cinema than a year ago, Telecom Daily calculated.
