In November, Christie’s auction of 20th century art will include, among others, a painting by the impressionist Claude Monet from the “Water Lilies” series. Its starting price is $65 million, as reported by Financial Times Christie’s Vice President for 20th and 21st Century Art Max Carter, the painting has been in a private family collection since 1972 and has apparently never been exhibited. According to the expert, this also means that it is very well preserved.
The painting “Pond with Water Lilies” (Le bassin aux nympheas) (1917–19), measuring 2×1 m, is part of a cycle of approximately 250 oil paintings by Claude Monet depicting the flower garden of the artist’s estate in Giverny. At the time of Monet’s death in 1926, this painting was in the estate. The auction will take place on November 9 in New York. Before the auction, the painting, along with other works from the 20th century art collection, will be exhibited in Hong Kong, then in London and Paris.
The record price at auction for paintings by Monet is $100 million. This is how much the buyer paid for “Haystacks,” a painting from a series of landscapes with haystacks, which was also in private hands before the sale. According to Max Carter, a painting from the Water Lilies series, Nympheas en fleur (1914–17), comparable in size and quality to “Water Lily Pond,” was sold at auction in 2018 for $84.7 million .
