Chinese Weichai stopped supplying gas engines to KamAZ due to sanctions

The Chinese engine-building corporation Weichai refused to supply KamAZ with gas engines. About it informs Izvestia newspaper, citing three sources familiar with the situation.
According to one of the interlocutors of the publication, this happened due to the fact that the Chinese authorities warned Weichai against working with companies that fell under Western sanctions.
“KAMAZ”used Weichai engines on K4 generation tractors running on natural gas fuel, including the 5490 gas tractor, which was released in February 2020. In addition, Chinese-made engines were installed on methane dump trucks.
Several interlocutors claim that against the backdrop of sanctions, KamAZ expected to install Weichai diesel engines on trucks of the classic K3 generation.
Another source in one of KamAZ’s customers specified that at present the manufacturer can only offer customers K3 generation equipment with an outdated 820 (V8) gas engine. According to the source, the company will develop a new gas-powered tractor only in the III-IV quarter of 2023.
KamAZ spokesman Oleg Afanasyev told the newspaper that production of the 5490 truck (belongs to the K4 generation) running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) will end this year. He stressed that the plant already has a replacement model – KamAZ-54901 for K5 generation LNG. The launch of its production is scheduled for the second half of 2023. It is specified that the truck will receive a KAMAZ R6 diesel engine.
At the same time, KamAZ refused to comment on cooperation with Weichai and other suppliers. The Russian representative office of Weichai-Rus Tradedinvest did not respond to the request.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia. Restrictive measures were taken, including against Russian individuals and companies. At the end of February, KamAZ came under EU sanctions, and in June the company was added to the US sanctions list. The US Treasury explained that KamAZ equipment was seen when the Russian military was moving around Ukraine.
