Canada will transfer the remaining five turbines for Nord Stream to Germany. About it stated Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly in an interview with CBC.
“That was the decision we made. This is exactly what Germany asked us to do,” she said.
Joly added that Canada does not want to give Moscow room for excuses for Russia to use gas supplies as an instrument of pressure on Europe.
The problem with the return of the turbine to Gazprom has more than once caused a reduction in gas supplies via Nord Stream. In mid-June, they decreased to 40%. And already at the end of July, gas pumping was reduced by another 20%, since “Gazprom» decommissioned another gas turbine engine at the Portovaya compressor station. The company explained that the equipment has expired the time between overhauls before overhaul.
From August 31 to September 2, Gazprom will stop the only gas pumping unit operating at the Portovaya compressor station (CS). The solution is related to maintenance and preventive maintenance.
Because of the sanctions imposed against Russia, Canada cannot return the equipment to Russia. As a result of negotiations with Germany, Ottawa agreed to transfer all six turbines undergoing maintenance in Montreal to Gazprom and sent one of them to Germany.
However, the turbine was never accepted by Gazprom due to legal uncertainty. In early August, Vitaly Markelov, deputy chairman of the company’s board, said that the gas monopoly was ready to accept the turbine if it received guarantees that sanctions would not be applied.
In Germany, they say that the turbine is ready for shipment. In early August, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Russia could pick her up at any time, all that was needed for this was her participation – she should provide the necessary information to go through customs.
