By 2025, pig enterprises will have to provide more than 50% of their grain needs with their own harvest. This is necessary to maintain competitiveness in the industry amid a glut of the market, according to the forecast of the National Union of Pig Breeders (NSS), which was reviewed by Vedomosti. It also says that companies will also have to 100% slaughter animals, as well as deep processing of meat.
Russia achieved self-sufficiency in pork back in 2018, when consumption reached 3.74 million tons. According to preliminary data from the NSS, this figure rose to 4.37 million tons last year. three years – from 5.28 million tons in live weight in 2022 to 6.03 million tons in 2025. After that, growth will stop, as the construction of pig farms will be completed, for which investment loans were issued back in 2018, it is said in NSS forecast. The representative of Rusagro (in 2021 ranked 4th in terms of pork production) claims that production will increase for another 1-2 years, then it will stop, as investments in new capacities do not pay off.
