Bruce Springsteen and Metallica set the heat in Europe

Given that the musicians play every other day, the Irish part of the tour stretched a bit, and during the time spent in Dublin, Springsteen became almost a native person there. His strict raincoat and dashing cap now and then ended up in pubs and iconic eateries of the city, the rock star was happy to take pictures with the locals, managed to meet the Irish punk legend Shane McGowan, the no less legendary folk rocker Donovan looked at Bruce’s soundcheck.
Springsteen’s concerts literally drown in passions and tears of nostalgia. Dublin journalists spent a lot of time in giant lines at the entrance to the arena, listening to fan stories. “One of Bruce’s songs was our first dance,” the sixty-something couple recalled. “I feel like I’m eighteen again now, and I’m rocking out at Bruce’s concert at Sloan Castle in 1986,” notes another longtime fan.
The Boss himself seems to be glad of the opportunity to stretch the bones. His previous tour with the E Street Band ended in 2018, and now the 73-year-old musician and his team can once again feel like a volcano of fan passions. The Springsteen show rushes like a vintage steam locomotive, but the artist himself on stage does not want to remember his age at all. His concert lasts more than three hours, during which the group plays almost thirty songs.
By the start of the encore, Springsteen is still a bunch of energy, and when Born in the USA begins to sound, only the most well-mannered and those who have shirts too expensive can resist the desire to tear shirts on their chests. In the heat of these passions, few people remember the slightly scandalous aura of the beginning of the tour.
The reason was ticket prices. In his native New York for the musician, for the opportunity to see Bruce on stage from the public, they asked for at least three hundred dollars, which is too much even for rich America. Separate indignation was caused by the fact that such a price is the result of a rather aggressive policy of the huge ticket operator Ticketmaster, which, after an alliance with the world’s main concert distributor Live Nation, actually dictates prices.
It was the strategists of this office who came up with the so-called dynamic pricing, when an increase in demand for tickets automatically makes them even more expensive. It is noteworthy that with online trading (and the other has practically disappeared), the public is billed for various services and the ticket price can almost double.
The leader of the British group The Cure, Robert Smith, decided to fight the monopolists before starting his American tour and, to the surprise of many, managed to convince ticket sellers to return part of the money to the people who bought them. Springsteen did nothing of the sort, but in an interview he stated his willingness to give money to anyone who did not like the show, and also noted that throughout his career he tried to keep ticket prices, often making them below the logical cost. And now it’s time to take yours. Judging by the total sell-out, the public does not intend to bargain with the idol.
Don’t mess with Metallica
Their music is hardly associated with irony, but on tour in support of the 72 Seasons album, jokes seem to be welcomed. “Do you want a new or old song? James Hetfield asks the crowd of 71,000 who gathered for the first concert of the tour in Amsterdam. “Playing a new one,” the frontman growls, but the old Seek & Destroy action is playing.
Critics, perhaps without much enthusiasm, again call Metallica the main heavy band on the planet, and the musicians are happy to show who is really in charge here. An impressive stage right in the middle of the stadium, seven huge screens, pyrotechnics and cunning mechanisms, thanks to which the drum set is located in four different places during the show.
Another important special effect of the tour is the intention of the band to play two concerts in each city, consisting of different songs. To put it bluntly, an interesting approach to working with the catalog and a good reason for real fans to go to both shows. After the release of the new album, many doubts were expressed about the appropriateness of fresh songs at concerts. Most of the album tracks are quite long and mid-tempo, making them not the most obvious choice for live performances.
But the musicians have repeatedly stressed that they are fascinated by their new material and do not intend to hide it. As a result, Lux AEterna, Screaming Suicide and Sleepwalk My Life Away got into the set list of new products. The rest of the show was obviously made with people in mind, who came for something eternal. And this eternal sounded in all its glory.
The combination of Nothing Else Matters and Sad But True is reminiscent of a deadly number. “Burn, Amsterdam, burn,” Hatfield yells, and the band fires up Fuel, driving the crowd into hysterics. At the show’s finale, the musicians show the signature magnanimity of stadium stars, scattering picks and drumsticks, a child who looks like not even ten years old receives a yellow bandanna from the frontman. But despite all these courtesies, Amsterdammers most likely feel burned by the deafening music and tons of rock charisma. Paris, where the heavy rampage will continue, will probably also get it from the heart.
