Box office receipts of Russian films increased by 2.6 times compared to 2021

Box office receipts from film distribution in Russia by November 15 reached 35 billion rubles, while Russian cinema brought in 25.1 billion rubles. The profitability of domestic box office this year is 2.6 times higher than for the same period in 2021. This was announced by the executive director of the Cinema Fund, Fyodor Sosnov.

The Director of the Cinema Fund presented these data in a presentation at the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum. The volume of film box office receipts in Russia as of November 15 did not change compared to 2021 data. However, if in 2021 the share of Russian cinema was 9.5 billion rubles, then in 2023 it increased to 25.1 billion rubles.

“When we talk about the fact that the fuel for the development of national film distribution, the fuel for the development of national film distribution is Hollywood or major releases, then here is an interesting illustration of what national distribution can live on and whether this affects its volume,” added the director Cinema Fund. According to Fyodor Sosnov, these data prove that Russian cinema can exist without Western releases.

According to the forecast of the head of the Association of Cinema Owners, Alexei Voronkov, by the end of the year, Russian cinemas can collect 35 billion rubles, with 75% of the box office coming from Russian films.
