Box office receipts of Russian cinemas fell by almost 50%

Over the ten months of 2022, the box office of Russian cinemas fell by 44% compared to the same period last year. This was announced by the head of the Department of Cinematography of the Ministry of Culture Dmitry Davidenko at a meeting in the Federation Council.

The head of the department attributed the fall in fees to the withdrawal of American film companies from the Russian market. Despite this, according to him, fees from screenings of Russian films are also declining. For ten months, fees from domestic films fell by 7.3%. At the same time, according to Dmitry Davidenko, 57 Russian-made films will be released by the end of this year.

At the moment, 2.1 thousand cinemas, as well as 5.3 thousand cinema halls, hold regular screenings. The decrease in the number of cinemas compared to the first week of 2022 was 11.5% (minus 277 cinemas and 679 cinema halls). Data from the Unified Automated Information System shows a smaller drop: since the beginning of the year, 103 cinemas have suspended film screenings, and 43 have closed.

In August, Deputy Dmitry Kuznetsov submitted to the State Duma a bill on compulsory licensing of content from unfriendly countries through the courts. For project acceptance spoke at the Association of Cinema Owners. The Media Communications Union (National Media Group, All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, MTS, Rostelecom, MegaFon) and Gazprom Media opposed it.
