Box office “Cheburashka” exceeded 5 billion rubles

The total collection of the film “Cheburashka” directed by Dmitry Dyachenko in Russia as of January 22 is 5.014 billion rubles, according to the report of the Unified Automated Information System (UAIS). The picture was released on January 1, it is the highest grossing Russian film in history.

The film was produced with government support and is distributed by Central Partnership. Since the beginning of January, Cheburashka has been watched by 16.15 million people during 235,000 screenings.

A number of film critics attribute the unprecedented commercial success of Cheburashka to the lack of alternative children’s and family films in Russian film distribution during the New Year holidays. The cartoon is also actively advertised on the Internet and on television, and is mentioned by Russian politicians in the context of events in Ukraine. January 20, official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry statedthat Cheburashka as a character was recognized in Ukraine as an “occupier”, and Ukrainian children “under fear of reprisal” cannot watch the new film.
