Bloomberg: Sakhalin-2 operator allowed gas payment in rubles

The new operator of the project for the production of liquefied natural gas “Sakhalin-2» asked its customers to pay for deliveries not in dollars if settlements in US currency are not possible due to sanctions, writes Bloomberg.
“According to the documents, buyers must use alternative currencies, including the ruble, euro, yen or British pound, if payment in dollars, as specified in the contracts, cannot be made,” the agency said.
At the same time, on August 18, Bloomberg informedthat the new operator of the project sent instructions to its customers to pay for gas supplies in dollars, as before, but not through foreign banks, but through the Russian one “Gazprombank“.
The new operator of the project for the production of liquefied natural gas “Sakhalin-2» – Sakhalin Energy LLC – started to work, the company announced on August 19. The company was established after the signing of a decree by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, according to which all the rights and obligations of the former operator of the Sakhalin-2 project, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. transferred to a specially created LLC.
The Sakhalin-2 LNG project is being implemented on the shelf of the Sakhalin Peninsula under a Production Sharing Agreement (PSA). It provides for the development of the predominantly oil Piltun-Astokhskoye and the predominant gas Lunskoye fields.
Now Gazprom owns 50% plus 1 share in the PSA project, Shell – 27.5% minus 1 share, Japanese Mitsui and Mitsubishi – 12.5 and 10% respectively. Shell announced the curtailment of projects in the Russian Federation after the start of a special military operation in Ukraine. Most of the LNG from the projectSakhalin-2» is shipped to Japan.
