Bloomberg learned about China’s plans to ask the US to lift sanctions against LNG from Russia

Chinese state-owned oil and gas companies China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) and Cnooc Ltd. are preparing to ask the United States to lift sanctions against a new Russian plant for the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG), writes Bloomberg with reference to sources. This is how China strives to prevent interruptions in fuel supplies.
According to the agency, Chinese ships may fall under US sanctions if they transport fuel from NOVATEK’s Arctic LNG 2. Cnooc and CNPC also purchase LNG from the United States and do not want to jeopardize supplies from American projects.
A request to lift sanctions would be rare for China, which often finds ways to circumvent restrictions, Bloomberg notes. The agency attributes the move to the fact that LNG ships are designed to transport fuel from large facilities, making it “virtually impossible” to conceal their movement.
On the eve of Reuters reportedthat NOVATEK sent customers a notice of force majeure related to LNG supplies from the Arctic LNG-2 project. It, as the agency writes, may be related to the sanctions that the United States imposed on the project on November 2.
