As stated in the certificate, in 2023, Mr. Makarov refused a Russian passport and now he has only one citizenship – Cyprus.
Mr. Makarov himself did not declare his renunciation of Russian citizenship. The Russian Forbes sent a request to the representative of the businessman, but did not receive a response.
In September 2022 Igor Makarov hit in the list of Russians and Ukrainians published by the Politic newspaper, which was previously classified by the authorities. It listed individuals under suspicion by the Cypriot government due to the issuance of “golden passports” in exchange for investments in 2008–2012.
At the time of publication of the material, Mr. Makarov occupies 1468th place in the ranking of the richest people in the world according to Forbes with a fortune of $ 2.1 billion. The basis of his fortune today is investments in Western markets. After the start of the special operation against Mr. Makarov, Great Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand imposed sanctions.
After February 24, 2022, several current and former members of the Forbes list announced their withdrawal from Russian citizenship. Among them are investor Timur Turlov, founder of Troika Dialog Ruben Vardanyan, investor Yuri Milner, founder of Revolut Nikolai Storonsky, and founder of Tinkoff Bank Oleg Tinkov.
