Artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev will head the Bolshoi Theater without leaving his current position. This was reported by Izvestia with reference to several sources. The new appointment may be announced on November 16 at the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum. Valery Gergiev has been the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater since 1988. The current general director of the Bolshoi, Vladimir Urin, has held this position since 2013. According to Izvestia, he will leave her of his own free will. His resignation letter, according to the publication’s sources, has already been signed by the Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova.

According to Kommersant FM art columnist Dmitry Butkevich, such a personnel decision is ambiguous:

“It is quite logical that the artistic director of the St. Petersburg theater is moving to Moscow. But combining the management of two largest theaters with ballet and opera schools, which have always not only been competitors, but at least competed with each other in a creative sense, is a rather controversial decision.

As they rightly say, this is the same as appointing the coach of the Zenit football club at the same time as the coach of Spartak or CSKA. The practice of combining exists, but it concerns producers and theater directors. The artistic director of the Mikhailovsky Theater, Vladimir Kekhman, is also the director of the Gorky Moscow Art Theater and the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater. And he perfectly manages to pull out this whole colossus. Of course, art direction is a little different.

From my point of view, the appointment of Valery Gergiev is a decision that cannot be clearly considered positive or negative. Let’s see how it goes. Gergiev is a great leader, a great musician.”

The Bolshoi Theater itself does not comment on the situation. At the same time, the appointment of Gergiev to the position of director of the main Moscow theater was mentioned earlier. Back in March 2022, President Vladimir Putin expressed the idea of re-establishing the general management of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters.

With the right management policy, two scenes can be brought from a state of competition to cooperation, says Evgeniy Safronov, editor-in-chief of the InterMedia news agency:

“A very interesting appointment, especially considering that Valery Abisalovich has very serious experience working with the largest cultural institutions in the country. Some other changes or mergers are possible at the Bolshoi Theater.

Entrepreneurial organizations can compete. In this case we are talking about cultural institutions that do one thing. If the relationship between them is built correctly, then it will not be about competition, but, on the contrary, about assistance. But it’s really difficult.

It is generally difficult to find young leaders now, because at one time our line of replacing older people with young people was interrupted, and as a result, a serious shortage of personnel arose. It is necessary to find a middle ground, so Gergiev’s appointment is predictable. They talked about this, but the decision is not made overnight.”

Previously, a complaint was filed against the Bolshoi Theater due to queues at the box office for tickets to The Nutcracker. Victims of the stampede filed appeals to the Investigative Committee, the prosecutor’s office, Rospotrebnadzor, the Ministry of Culture and the presidential administration. They accused the theater of poor organization of the ticket office. According to Vladimir Urin, queues, lists and numbers are the responsibility of the police.
